Do local planning authorities realise they are in a race? The Government thinks so. ‘Planning will get faster’ is a mantra we keep hearing, but what’s the carrot, and where’s the stick?
The carrot is allowing LPAs to set their own planning fees, as promised in the Planning & Infrastructure Bill. The stick is the Planning Performance Dashboard, which is (yuck) a spreadsheet. An easier way to check out LPA performance is in our easy-to-read summary here.
Is the stick working? Maybe. We’ve tracked the performance of LPAs over the past 3 quarters and some are definitely improving. Major applications, minor and householder applications are measured separately, so some LPAs have focused on improving one at the expense of the others. For the full picture see our table of planning performance change over time.
